Wesley Willis – Rock n Roll Will Never Die

Wesley Willis passed away on Thursday August 21, 2003 at the age of 40. We here at CoolCDs.com and Oglio Records are very saddened by his passing. He left a big impression everywhere he went and with everyone he met. We'll never forget him.

Wesley was a Chicago Street artist and diagnosed chronic schizophrenic. Wesley was haunted by demons that called him names and taunted him. While most people would be severely hampered by such an illness, Wesley took it as a reason to rock. During his life, Wesley attracted the attention of music business stars like White Zombie, Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra, members of the Beastie Boys and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

This CD is a collection of the best of Wesley's songs about his favorite rock bands. Order it, you'll love it!

Wisely – Wisely

Buy Now!

Wisely

A genuine album in a singles era, Wisely asks James Blunt and Jenny Lewis to close their eyes and touch noses with twelve songs for change, California, and Billy Preston that signal the graduation of a cult hero into rich, real life.  Looking back: once there was a kid named Willie who couldn’t decide if he wanted to be John Lennon, Paul Westerberg, or Sammy Davis Jr. Luckily, it was the late 80’s in Minneapolis.  You could be all three at once. He enjoyed some success at this. Of course the kid was ahead of his time and, of course, Willie Wisely had to leave home to shake off that youthful genius and just be genius.

“Dinkytown”

Living in a teetering Victorian dive in Dinkytown, the university crossroads where a Zimmerman once became a Dylan, Wisely made music by day and worked in the famous First Avenue nightclub promotions office downtown at night. He saw every band that mattered twice and perfected his own approach with a scrappy pop-punk-jazz quartet he called his trio. They toured like madmen, crisscrossing the American highways, playing college commons, dives, and rec rooms. After two, fine W.W. Trio albums, Wisely went solo. The year was 1996: Endtroducing…, If You’re Feeling Sinister, Pinkerton, She.

She

“It easily heads up the short list of the area’s finest pop record of the year.” - St. Paul Pioneer Press

Released on a label owned by the guy who wrote “Funkytown,” She was the record in Wisely’s head when he first picked up a guitar. Together with future Switchfoot, Mandy Moore, and Jimmy Eat World producer John Fields, Wisely dug fast and deep into the crates blurting out a collection of strangely related singles sick with luscious hooks, ringing guitars, and clever choruses cut with wild runs at soul, jazz, and glam rock: Wisely’s masterpiece.

“The most righteous blend of '60s pop and '70s rock.” - Los Angeles Weekly

Clearly it was time to leave home.

Parador

With a foot in Silverlake and a hand in Hollywood Wisely played Twister under the palm fronds. He chatted up Beck at parties, enthused about Eleni Mandell, and got cast in the first episode Six Feet Under. He released another album with now fellow Midwest expat Fields, composed a few indie soundtracks, and produced a wide range of artists. Time flew. The opportunity came to work with producer Linus of Hollywood and the resulting Parador revealed another leap forward. The LA Times quickly declared it his “most accomplished album.” Jenna Fischer of The Office enthused on her blog and—wait, that’s her in the video for “Through Any Window.”

Wisely

In the meantime Wisely became Mr. Wisely with a Mrs. and, some time later, Daddy Wisely, soon to be double deluxe gate-fold. He wrote, recorded, erased, recorded, and wrote. With 76 acoustic demos in-hand Wisely called his friend Petur Smith and they went down into the basement.

“I was painfully aware that spending six months working on an album, earning little or no money, was gonna be a huge burden on my family, while Kay sat listening to drum takes through the floor, gestating our 2nd kid.  There could be no artifice. Just beauty. All architecture. No… musicals.”

Wisely had never been so plain spoken. Songs like “On My Way” and “Vanilla” moved naturally on well-lit paths to chorus. Some tracks remained little changed from the original demos. Others took root a world away from She; spare, deep, and sweetly nostalgic.

“As far as production touchstones, we listened to Graham Coxon’s Happiness In Magazines, and Aha Shake Heartbreak by Kings of Leon. Boss of Sweden, Phoenix. We wanted directness. We didn’t think much about my past work.”

Songs fell away and songs grew larger. Those that stuck were personal, full frontal. “It’s Gonna Be Beautiful” daring to say “make love” and mean it, the concrete poetry of “Unfamiliar,” and one song for Ella Wisely, age 1.

As the project developed, the sessions were joined and inspired by many like-minded LA musicians including members of Paul McCartney’s band, Ray Wonder, and The Soundtrack Of Our Lives.

“Petur and I kept screaming at each other about how roofy or unroofy it was. The mantra for the production session was, ‘could the Beatles have played this with Billy Preston on the rooftop?’”

Finally. The record that was in his head when he first crossed the California state border. Genius. Wisely.

Excerpt from AllMusicGuide.com Album Review by Greg Prato

Remember the band Dread Zeppelin? Well, here's a reminder -- they're a band that caused a minor stir in the early '90s when they took Led Zeppelin classics, added a dash of reggae, and were fronted by an Elvis Presley impersonator (who alternated between reciting Zeppelin and Elvis lyrics). It was perhaps only a matter of time until another group came along that mashed together two other renowned rock acts, and while Zeppelin and Elvis aren't exactly universes apart musically, the Beatles and Metallica are -- which makes the emergence of Beatallica much more of a curiosity...

Excerpt from AllMusicGuide.com Album Review by Jason Lymangrover

The world's favorite impersonators of Metallica impersonating the Beatles are back with their second release All You Need Is Blood. This time they've taken "All You Need Is Love" and replaced the lyrics with metal-themed flair to convert lines like "nothing you can see that can't be shown" to "nothin' you can smash that can't be smashed" in a dead-on James Hetfield imitation...

AllMusicGuide.com album review by Greg Prato

Remember the band Dread Zeppelin? Well, here's a reminder -- they're a band that caused a minor stir in the early '90s when they took Led Zeppelin classics, added a dash of reggae, and were fronted by an Elvis Presley impersonator (who alternated between reciting Zeppelin and Elvis lyrics). It was perhaps only a matter of time until another group came along that mashed together two other renowned rock acts, and while Zeppelin and Elvis aren't exactly universes apart musically, the Beatles and Metallica are -- which makes the emergence of Beatallica much more of a curiosity. And somehow the band (whose members go by such colorful nom de plumes as Jaymz Lennfield, Grg Hammettson, Kliff McBurtney, and Ringo Larz) mixes and matches Beatles and Metallica riffs/lyrics pretty flawlessly -- as evidenced throughout 2007's Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band. First off, it must be stated that it is absolutely eerie how much Lennfield is able to replicate James Hetfield's manly bark (it really does sound as if it's the actual Metallica singer throughout). Some of the tracks are a bit silly -- such as "A Garage Dayz Nite" and "Ktulu (He's So Heavy)" -- but you have to give the quartet credit for how they craftily merge "Enter Sandman" and "Taxman" together, as..."Sandman." The next time you're going to party with headbanging pals, put on Sgt. Hetfield's Motorbreath Pub Band toward the end of the night, and watch their mullets spin as they enter this bizarro world.

MASTERFUL MYSTERY TOUR

Those other inglorious bastards, Beatallica, the only rock band in the world legally approved to bash up The Beatles and Metallica into new original masterpieces, return with the brand spanking new studio album, Masterful Mystery Tour, on Oglio Records, a Fontana/Universal distributed label. Masterful Mystery Tour is the official follow up to Sgt. Hetfield’s Motorbreath Pub Band, the album that owes its initial legal existence to the coolness that is Lars Ulrich with the official blessing from the Metallica camp. Recorded on the heels of their All You Need Is Blood EP and the Drinkus Maximus World Tour, Beatallica along with their producer and engineer Flemball Rasmartin, have hit their stride for maximum awesomeness, taking their sound to a whole new blistering level. Beatallica’s technically brilliant musicianship and uncanny ability to craft two polar opposites into new unique must hear songs, continues to separate them from the pack.

Palmdale – How To Be Mean

THINGS I THINK ABOUT ON PLANES

There's no fear of flight
Grinning into freight train headlights
I upgrade to Xanny class
Drain my second glass
And think about the things I think about on planes

I can't let you go
Twilight phantoms tiny windows
Barreling toward dusk
Might as well give up
And think about the things I think about on planes

I've been dreaming about
How it's gonna be
When the wheels touch down
Will you be you and will I still be me?

There are no dead ends
Just secrets, thieves and friends
I think about the things I think about on planes

MEET THE FUTURE DOWNLOW

Nice is never good enough
I like it when the trip is rough
Never dodge a fight 'cause there ain't nothing like
A bad save
You could twist or you could bend
And arrive at the same end
Doomed chair on a different deck

Meet the future downlow
There's only one way to go
Keeping it deep like the undertow
Wouldn't you like to know

Karma is a fickle bitch
Providence a wicked snitch
Awaited by a beast
The lucky to the least deserving
Skinny dip in the midnight sea
In stilettos of concrete
Get wasted on suicide dreams

Meet the future downlow
There's only one way to go
Keeping it deep like the undertow
Wouldn't you like to know

You flew in a lead balloon
To find out that gravity hates you
Broken bones and all
You set up for the fall again

Meet the future downlow
There's only one way to go
Keeping it deep like the undertow
Wouldn't you like to know

HERE WE GO

Take it back white is not black
And I'm staring out like a rabbit in a trap
Take it back white is not black
And I'm staring out like a rabbit in a trap

I can hear sound and lips are moving
But you could be from Japan, yeah
I could stand up straight and face the truth
But I'll never understand, no

Stomp the pavement
Crush me like a daffodil
I don't wanna know

Here we go
No
Riding in the fast lane slow
Look me in the eye tell me you don't need it
Say it all you want but I don't believe it
You're ready to stop but I'm not
So here we go

I don't wanna know
You say I gotta know
But I don't wanna know

Take it back white is not black
And I'm staring out like a rabbit in a trap
Take it back white is not black
And I'm staring out like a rabbit in a trap

I'm gonna pass out drunk on your girlfriend's lawn
With your name scrawled across my chest, yeah
I'm gonna call you 20 times and beg for mercy
That I know I'll never get, no

Go ahead pretend like it's another day
I'm sorry you feel that way

Here we go
No
Riding in the fast lane slow
Look me in the eye tell me you don't need it
Say it all you want but I don't believe it
You're ready to stop but I'm not
So here we go

CAN'T CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU

Trip trip tripping on delayed reaction
Fuck that shit, it's a call to action
Kamikazes, luck + love
The look in the eye of a nervous friend
The scary weird feeling when it happens again
Everything we do is wrong
Wonder why it took so long

I can't can't wait to see you
You can't can't wait to see me too
I got scared right outta my mind
Mad at love about a hundred times
And I can't can't wait to see you

Sick to my stomach
No sleep at night
Dizzy as a top and high as a kite
I'm spaced out staring at my shoes
Spastic jones like you wouldn't believe
Dousing that spark with kerosene
Planets swirl around the sun
Cocked and ready loaded gun

I can't can't wait to see you
You can't can't wait to see me too
I got scared right outta my mind
Mad at love about a hundred times
And I can't can't wait to see you

Meet me right now at LAX
Leave our lives in a wicked mess
At midnight and get drunk at the bar
Let's do something we'll never forget
Let's do things we're gonna regret
It's not right but I'm tired of caring
I just wanna be anywhere you are

Please can't we leave this alone?
Wait, please don't leave me alone

I can't can't wait to see you..

PICK UP THE PHONE

I blew the light like a spaced out trucker
And I hate myself for that
You say the right words and I'm a sucker
It's the same old same speed trap
What I've done is not to be believed

Hey. I know your ass is home
Hey. And you're probably not alone
You get away and I'm talking to machines again
And I know you won't pick up
And you're never gonna pick up
The phone

I got the secret information
There's no witnesses
So darling don't you forget your station
With no hits only misses
What you've done is not to be believed

Hey. I know your ass is home
Hey. And you're probably not alone
You get away and I'm talking to machines again
And I know you won't pick up
And you're never gonna pick up
The phone

We're not friends
You're making me the enemy
It all depends
What you do to me

I make a list of the things that I do well
Building ladders that go straight to hell

HOW TO BE MEAN

Press play roll the tape
And spin out like I do
Infinite battleship
I'm not prepared to lose
I got noble rot a sick funny feeling
Let's go you got me so amplified
You get laid
I get paid
I know how to be mean

No use fighting a war that you'll never win
Off and running
Spit that venom disguised like saccharine
Keep it coming
What you don't know
Would chill you to the bone
I know how to be mean

Wide eyes to the light
Like sugar to a fly
Bad chess getting played
At least you tried
Love dead sloppy head don't pay attention
Windshield never beat a slugger swing
You get off
You get tossed
You showed me how to be mean

No use fighting a war that you'll never win
Off and running
Spit that venom disguised like saccharine
Keep it coming
What you don't know
Would chill you to the bone
I know how to be mean

Never be the one who got away
Adventures in dumb the bed is made
Gimme what you got I'll make you pay

PALMDALE RELEASES NEW EP “HOW TO BE MEAN” FOR OGLIO RECORDS
FIRST SINGLE IS THE HARD HITTING POP HIT, “HERE WE GO”

Los Angeles, CA - Palmdale, the new duo featuring Kay Hanley and Linus of Hollywood, follow up on their Get Wasted debut with How To Be Mean, the new EP available from Oglio Records, a Fontana/Universal distributed label. The first single from How To Be Mean is “Here We Go”, already a fan favorite from their ongoing video blog series where they have been documenting their studio and songwriting processes since the release of their debut, Get Wasted.

“When we finished writing and recording Get Wasted, we had such a good creative flow going that we just kept writing what would become How To Be Mean. The title track was the first one we wrote, and that sort of laid the blueprint for the sound of the new EP. Writing and recording together has been very easy and fast since we are pretty much a self-contained unit (Kay and I play, sing, write and produce everything ourselves.) The new EP is a little more diverse than the last, from the hard-hitting "Here We Go" to the almost alt-country "Things I Think About On Planes" (a song that Kay brought in, in an almost finished state and is one of my favorites on the record). We also used a different team for mixing (Tom Polce) and mastering (Dave Collins) and they did a slam-dunk job!” - Linus from Palmdale on How To Be Mean

Palmdale is Kay Hanley (former lead singer for Boston alt-pop band, Letters To Cleo) and producer Linus of Hollywood. They signed with Oglio Records where Linus has produced albums from Nerf Herder, The Leftovers, Kurt Baker and more. Oglio Records is a nationally distributed independent label based in Torrance, California and has quietly become one of Los Angeles’s longest running labels devoted to Power Pop, working over the years with Pop legends Brian Wilson, Cyndi Lauper, Shonen Knife and more.

BIO

Palmdale is the “nom de rock” adopted by Kay Hanley + Linus Of Hollywood as they embarked on a new song writing venture in the summer of 2009.

Kay Hanley is the former lead singer of Boston alt-pop band, Letters To Cleo. Since the band’s split in 2000, Kay has released 3 solo recordings and has provided songs and vocals for many film + TV projects, including Josie + The Pussycats and Ten Things I Hate About You.

Multi-instrumentalist Linus Of Hollywood has an eclectic resume that began as the frontman for the influential pop/punk band Size 14. Since then, Linus has released 5 solo albums, started two labels (Franklin Castle and Crappy Records) and has built a career as producer/songwriter, working with a diverse roster of artists (Bowling For Soup, Puff Daddy, Charlatans UK and Cheap Trick to name a few).

Long time fans of one another’s work, Linus + Kay became acquainted while active participants in Los Angeles’ thriving music community and decided to combine forces. Originally, their collaboration was intended to produce pop songs that other artists would record, but that idea was quickly scrapped when the music began to take on a cohesive sound and depth. They kept the material for themselves, tweaked the focus and continued writing. They recorded the songs in fall/winter of 2009 as Palmdale.

Their first EP, “Get Wasted” was produced by Linus + Kay (all instruments played by Linus except drums) and was released March 23, 2010 (digital only) by Oglio Records.

Hot off the heels of their catchy juggernaut 'Here Comes The Summer' which earned them much praise and adoration in the indie music community including spins on the World Famous KROQfm and KCRW, the now full-fledged duo continued their song writing frenzy and have a brand new EP ready for release! 'How To Be Mean' will be available for digital download on November 9th, 2010 by Oglio Records.

With an even bigger sound and lyrical assault Palmdale continues to impress their agenda of fun and fury. Once again produced by Kay and Linus, the new EP's first single 'Can't Can't Wait To See You' will have you singing along against your better judgement. It's tastier. It's meatier. And it's good for you. Let's Palmdale.

ABOUT HOLIDAY EXPRESS

On Thanksgiving Eve, 1993, as restaurateur and musician Tim McLoone prepared for yet another holiday surrounded by loving family and friends, he felt a strong sense of gratitude... but also a nagging sense that he should do something to bring this warmth to others less fortunate.

He turned to his network of musician friends with the idea of bringing the healing power of music to people whose lives needed an injection of happiness. By that December, his small band of troubadours and other volunteers put on parties for AIDS patients, the developmentally disabled, the isolated elderly and disadvantaged children. At the end of the first season, Tim's makeshift group of merry-makers performed for more than 6,000 people in 10 different venues.

After the tinsel and jingle bells were put into storage, Tim and his friends could not easily put aside the emotions brought on by seeing so many people in such difficult circumstances. The group knew that they had to keep the momentum going. They dubbed themselves Holiday Express, and, in 1994, received approval to operate as a non-profit, non-sectarian organization.

Every year, Holiday Express has grown in reputation, in volunteer members and in reach. The band currently boasts more than 70 singers and musicians from noted bands and the Broadway stage. Our general volunteers offer countless ideas, skills and talents.

The group visits more than 50 institutions every year between November and the end of December, bringing its unique brand of music, food, presents and pure joy to people who need the gift of human kindness. The handful of volunteers who helped host the first parties in 1993 has since mushroomed to more than 90 dedicated musicians and 1200 general volunteers who help keep the organization running like a well-oiled wheel, with just four steadfast employees who handle day-to-day operations.

Indeed, Holiday Express has an indefinable something that makes a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of area residents. This magical aura is reflected in the hugs and smiles of our many clients. No holiday glitter shines brighter!
